Culture Night @ NUI Galway

This Culture Night, the University community has come together to offer a feast of culture and creativity in venues across the city and campus:


NUI Galway Culture Night Lunchtime Trail – 1.00pm with the Galway Music Residency
1pm, commences in Siobhán McKenna Theatre, Arts Millennium Building, NUI Galway

Starting from the Siobhan McKenna Theatre, Arts Millennium Building, and the Galway Music Residency continues its early start to Culture Night in conjunction with NUI Galway, its long term Education Partner. Together, we bring you a lunchtime experience of music, song, art and performance on the theme of ‘movement’. In the Arts Millennium Building, Psychology Building and adjacent outdoor venues, ConTempo Quartet, NUI Galway Staff Singers, NUI Galway Drama and Performance Studies students and staff, and NUI Galway Arts Office will present an audio-visual show celebrating the beauty of ‘movement’. Irish Research Council Seminar – Cultures of Exclusion in Contemporary Ireland

4pm, Moore Institute Seminar Room, G010 Hardiman Building, NUI Galway

This panel discussion will bring together Irish Research Council funded experts to share their findings on homelessness and how the current housing crisis in Ireland intersects with other forms of exclusion and inequality. Topics may include direct provision and refugees; gender, racial and class inequalities in social-housing provision; experiences of statelessness amongst homeless and migrants and what’s being done to make Ireland a more inclusive and equitable society, where every resident has adequate accommodation to call home. Scout campfire experience with smore making and hot chocolate

5pm & 6pm, Fisheries Field, NUI Galway (across from Cathedral)

A traditional scout campfire experience with instructions and supplies for smores (biscuits, chocolate and toasted marshmallow) we will also do hot chocolate. (BYO Cup) MORE INFO


The Sporting History of County Galway

5.30pm-7.30pm, Galway City Museum, Spanish Arch
A dozen researchers present short and snappy illustrated talks on the theme of the sporting history of Co. Galway. This Culture Night event is curated and presented by Dr. John Cunningham and Dr. Sarah-Anne Buckley of the History Department at NUI, Galway. MORE INFO

 

The Melting Pot Luck – Crossing Points: Our Creative Journeys

6pm, The Cube Theatre, Áras na Mac Léinn, NUI Galway

An interactive performance that explores the crossing points between Irish culture and the different cultures that people in our community come from, Amazigh, Syrian, Palestinian, Nigerian and many more. Using music, stories, poetry and art as a way of mapping the journeys made to get here we aim to create a welcoming space where people can learn about other cultures and celebrate the many things we have in common. Man on the Moon

6pm-8pm, Computer and Communications Museum of Ireland, Dangan Business Park

Visit this fabulous tech museum on Culture Night and see how Space came to Earth in the Science Fiction themes of popular Retro Computer Games, Robots, Toys, Comics, Music and Movies of the 1960s-1980s. MORE INFO


Visionation

7.30pm, The Cube Theatre, Áras na Mac Léinn, NUI Galway

A series of stories featuring everyday characters and lives within the direct provision system in Ireland, Visionation is devised with actors living in direct provision in Ireland. Behind Closed Doors exposes life in the direct provision system. Stories of everyday life interweave with live music and visual projections to show the impact of life in the direct provision system.
